400 s Bert Crane Rd, Atwater, ca
Flown there since
July 2005. Col. Charles (Chuck) T. Winter, USAF (RET.) invited me
to get my
A.M.A. and go flying there. The price joining the RC field in Merced
is very reasonable: $50 a year. He told me you can fly all kinds of
planes, including Park Flyers, gliders, etc. It is not only a field for
Nitro planes. (Brian Runner, from
Merced College, told me
he helped design the field)
Joe Herb Park
A good place for park flyers. Since the wind is always NW, you do not
really have a long leg for final approach. I would not recommend flying
bigger planes unless you are an ACE Pilot landing. There are a few
thermals NW from the lower runway.
Merced College
Nice place to fly. You start your approach on the South East corner, and
will have enough runway to land. Be careful with the Goal Frame at the end
of the landing streep! There is a High Voltage power line bordering the
East and South border of the field, watch out! The place is suited for 2M
gliders with "heavy" electric engine and battery. Excellent for park
flyers. Very few thermals NW of the runway.
Yosemite Lake
Excellent place! Ultra long for final approach, and wide enough. Great
thermals SE and E of the runway. Do not arrive early, they water the lawn!
If you are good landing, you can try the asphalt (do not hit the trees and
be aware of the thermal lift effect). Place is great for park flyers; and
according to Richard, well suited for Nitro Planes.
High School at Olive and G
Never flown there. Will try soon!
Merced College Yosemite and M
Never tried it!
Fly at Work
Small for park flyers. You can take off and fly, but will get dizzy flying
in circles. It is a challenge for the intermediate pilot. The advanced
pilot should have no problem with park flyers. I am not there yet.
Fly at Alfonso's Ranch in Cathey's Valley
Should be large enough!
